PERSEPOLIS
Author: SATRAPI
ISBN: 9780375714573
Originally published to wide critical acclaim in France, where it elicited comparisons to Art Spiegelman's Maus,
Persepolis is Marjane Satrapi's wise, funny, and heartbreaking memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic
Revolution. In powerful black-and-white comic strip images, Satrapi tells the story of her life in Tehran from
ages six to fourteen, years that saw the overthrow of the Shah's regime, the triumph of the Islamic Revolution,
and the devastating effects of war with Iraq. The intelligent and outspoken only child of committed Marxists and
the great-granddaughter of one of Iran's last emperors, Marjane bears witness to a childhood uniquely entwined
with the history of her country.
Persepolis paints an unforgettable portrait of daily life in Iran: of the bewildering contradictions between home
life and public life and of the enormous toll repressive regimes exact on the individual spirit. Marjane's child's-eye-view
of dethroned emperors, state-sanctioned whippings, and heroes of the revolution allows us to learn as she does
the history of this fascinating country and of her own extraordinary family. Intensely personal, profoundly political,
and wholly original, Persepolis is at once a story of growing up and a stunning reminder of the human cost of war
and political repression. It shows how we carry on, through laughter and tears, in the face of absurdity. And,
finally, it introduces us to an irresistible little girl with whom we cannot help but fall in love.

THINGS THEY CARRIED
Author: OBRIEN
ISBN: 9780618706419
One of the first questions people ask about The Things They Carried is this: Is it a novel, or a collection
of short stories? The title page refers to the book simply as "a work of fiction," defying the conscientious
reader's need to categorize this masterpiece. It is both: a collection of interrelated short pieces which ultimately
reads with the dramatic force and tension of a novel. Yet each one of the twenty-two short pieces is written with
such care, emotional content, and prosaic precision that it could stand on its own.
The Things They Carried depicts the men of Alpha Company: Jimmy Cross, Henry Dobbins, Rat Kiley, Mitchell Sanders,
Norman Bowker, Kiowa, and of course, the character Tim O'Brien who has survived his tour in Vietnam to become a
father and writer at the age of forty-three. They battle the enemy (or maybe more the idea of the enemy), and occasionally
each other. In their relationships we see their isolation and loneliness, their rage and fear. They miss their
families, their girlfriends and buddies; they miss the lives they left back home. Yet they find sympathy and kindness
for strangers (the old man who leads them unscathed through the mine field, the girl who grieves while she dances),
and love for each other, because in Vietnam they are the only family they have.
We hear the voices of the men and build images upon their dialogue. The way they tell stories about others, we
hear them telling stories about themselves. With the creative verve of the greatest fiction and the intimacy of
a searing autobiography, The Things They Carried is a testament to the men who risked their lives in America's
most controversial war. It is also a mirror held up to the frailty of humanity. Ultimately The Things They Carried
and its myriad protagonists call to order the courage, determination, and luck we all need to survive.

FAHRENHEIT 451
Author: BRADBURY
ISBN: 9781451673319
Ray Bradbury's internationally acclaimed novel Fahrenheit 451 is a masterwork of twentieth-century literature set in a bleak, dystopian future.
Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden.
Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family." But then he meets an eccentric young neighbor, Clarisse, who introduces him to a past where people didn't live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of television.
When Mildred attempts suicide and Clarisse suddenly disappears, Montag begins to question everything he has ever known. He starts hiding books in his home, and when his pilfering is discovered, the fireman has to run for his life.

NIGHT
Author: WIESEL
ISBN: 9780374500016
Night by Elie Wiesel is a literary masterpiece and a candid, horrific and deeply poignant autobiographical account
of Wiesel's survival as a teenager in the Nazi death camps. In this new 2006 translation by Elie's Wife, Marion
Wiesel, Elie reflects on the enduring importance of Night and his lifelong, passionate dedication to ensuring that
the world never forgets man's capacity for inhumanity to man. As Marion was frequently Wiesel's translator, she
was able to capture this memoir in the language and spirit truest to her husband s original intent.
Night offers much more than a litany of the daily terrors, everyday perversions, and rampant sadism at Auschwitz
and Buchenwald; it also eloquently addresses many of the philosophical as well as personal questions implicit in
any serious consideration of what the Holocaust was, what it meant, and what its legacy is and will be.

ANGELA'S ASHES
Author: MCCOURT
ISBN: 9780684842677
"When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I managed to survive at all. It was, of course, a miserable
childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable
Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood."
So begins the luminous memoir of Frank McCourt, born in Depression-era Brooklyn to recent Irish immigrants and
raised in the slums of Limerick, Ireland. Frank's mother, Angela, has no money to feed the children since Frank's
father, Malachy, rarely works, and when he does he drinks his wages. Yet Malachy--exasperating, irresponsible and
beguiling--does nurture in Frank an appetite for the one thing he can provide: a story. Frank lives for his father's
tales of Cuchulain, who saved Ireland, and of the Angel on the Seventh Step, who brings his mother babies.
Perhaps it is story that accounts for Frank's survival. Wearing rags for diapers, begging a pig's head for Christmas
dinner and gathering coal from the roadside to light a fire, Frank endures poverty, near-starvation and the casual
cruelty of relatives and neighbors--yet lives to tell his tale with eloquence, exuberance and remarkable forgiveness.
Angela's Ashes, imbued on every page with Frank McCourt's astounding humor and compassion, is a glorious book that
bears all the marks of a classic.

Author: MILLER
ISBN: 9780142437339
"I believe that the reader will discover here the essential nature of one of the strangest and most awful chapters in human history," Arthur Miller wrote in an introduction to The Crucible, his classic play about the witch-hunts and trials in seventeenth-century Salem, Massachusetts. Based on historical people and real events, Miller's drama is a searing portrait of a community engulfed by hysteria. In the rigid theocracy of Salem, rumors that women are practicing witchcraft galvanize the town's most basic fears and suspicions; and when a young girl accuses Elizabeth Proctor of being a witch, self-righteous church leaders and townspeople insist that Elizabeth be brought to trial. The ruthlessness of the prosecutors and the eagerness of neighbor to testify against neighbor brilliantly illuminate the destructive power of socially sanctioned violence. Written in 1953, The Crucible is a mirror Miller uses to reflect the anti-communist hysteria inspired by Senator Joseph McCarthy's "witch-hunts" in the United States. Within the text itself, Miller contemplates the parallels, writing "Political opposition...is given an inhumane overlay, which then justifies the abrogation of all normally applied customs of civilized behavior. A political policy is equated with moral right, and opposition to it with diabolical malevolence."

and political repression. It shows how we carry on, through laughter and tears, in the face of absurdity. And,
finally, it introduces us to an irresistible little girl with whom we cannot help but fall in love.

One of the most important works of twentieth-century American literature, Zora Neale Hurston's beloved 1937 classic, Their Eyes Were Watching God, is an enduring Southern love story sparkling with wit, beauty, and heartfelt wisdom. Told in the captivating voice of a woman who refuses to live in sorrow, bitterness, fear, or foolish romantic dreams, it is the story of fair-skinned, fiercely independent Janie Crawford, and her evolving selfhood through three marriages and a life marked by poverty, trials, and purpose. A true literary wonder, Hurston's masterwork remains as relevant and affecting today as when it was first published -- perhaps the most widely read and highly regarded novel in the entire canon of African American literature.
